Bridging the gap: theatre visionaries bring a little drama to Catskill

Bridge Street Theatre owners John Sowle and Steven Patterson—a powerhouse couple who have been involved in theater for decades—pride themselves on providing a mecca for unique and offbeat performances that keep the audience on their toes from within the unexpectedly artistic community of Catskill.

As soon as they moved to Greene County in 2008, John and Steven wanted to get involved in the burgeoning Catskill arts community, but it wasn’t until five years later—after passing an old book depository with a “For Sale” sign out front daily on their way to the gym—that they realized how they could make their mark. When they finally took a look at the 12,000-square-foot building, they knew it was the perfect place to realize their dream: creating an arts center as a home for their own theater company, Kaliyuga Arts, and, more importantly, as a resource for the community.
